With a punchier flavour and more fibrous texture than western celery. It has a sharp, peppery taste and are usually eaten cooked rather raw as the flavour mellows once cooked.

To sow Chinese celery seeds, start them indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost, thinly scattering the seeds on the surface of a seed starting mix, covering them lightly with a fine layer of soil, and keeping them warm and moist until germination; once seedlings emerge, provide adequate light and thin them to individual pots when large enough to handle; transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing plants 8-10 inches apart.
