Cipolla Borettana Sweet Italian Pickling Onions seeds - 15 seeds

The Borettana onion is a traditional Italian variety from Boretto, in the Emilia-Romagna region. The bulbs are flat and relatively small. They are eaten as an appetizer, especially pickled in balsamic vinegar. With their sweet, mild flavor they are also wonderful for cooking. These sweet onions have been cultivated since the 1400s and were brought to Europe and America by Italian immigrants in the 19th century

Flat, yellow-brown bulbs with paper-thin skin, 2–3 inches in diameter and 1–1.5 inches thick

Mild, sweet flavour that lends itself to raw or cooked use and are traditionally braised in balsamic vinegar and served as a side dish with chicken or fish. Good for salads, cooking, or pickling

Growing

Sow liberally but not too thickly, into finely raked, firmed, moist soil or compost in containers, beds or borders at a depth of 1.3cm (½") in rows 15cm (6") apart. No thinning is necessary. Grows best in well-prepared soil manured the previous autumn or a quality compost if grown in containers. Water freely during periods of dry weather. Sow a pinch of seed fortnightly so that small tasty salad onions are always available for the salad bowl.
